This is the first of a series of fantasy, sword and sorcery paintings that I started in the 70s. The man is bound with chains connected to something out of site of the viewer. I wasn't concerned with that element as much as showing the feeling of helplessness, which I was probably experiencing at the time. If you look closely below his left knee, you'll see a small nick in the canvas that I made with scissors during an angry, probably drunken, fit.
